The past 5 years have shown a significant shift in web development trends and I would like to share my observations.
Websites were originally developed to share information. These text heavy websites were effective in that mission, but lacked any style, form or other function. You can still find many of these sites in a search on Google or Yahoo because these sites tend to be key word rich and can experience high rankings in a search engine.
As web development software improved, a migration towards graphics and more dynamic design brought sites with visual appeal and improved functionality. The mission to share information did not change, however, it delivered that message with more style. Websites began to take on a role in the marketing of a business or the self-promotion of an individual. Many sites were developed and launched in Flash to provide an enhanced “cool” factor, however the practicality of flash soon became evident, it was not that practical.
The shift today has brought a balance of both information delivery, dynamic design and has taken the next step in becoming a useful tool. Today’s websites serve the business in many ways.
Marketing
As a dynamic marketing tool, not only is the website delivering the message, it has a high level of interaction with the use of video, auto responders, blogs, RSS feeds, enewsletters and live web casts. The smart business owner uses flash elements in a site, for a specific purpose and only where it is needed.
Business management
Many businesses are turning to the web for the latest tools to manage their business. Often time these tools are non-public websites that an owner logs in and has access to project management tools, membership management, or client relations.
Team productivity
Many website tools are developed to improve the productivity of a specific business function that is normally time consuming, but important to the business. Human resources is typically a paper heavy, time consuming task that can be improved on the web. More importantly, if a business has employment reporting requirements, the reports can be generated dynamically on the web.
The trends are clear and so much has changed in such a short period of time. We can only assume that pace will continue. The internet went from fad to mission critical in less than a decade.

YWAM Jacksonville exists for the purpose of forming, equipping, sending, and supporting church plant teams to the unreached people groups of North Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and South East Asia.
